What is A106 Pipes
A106 Pipe/ a106 gr b erw pipe  is the black carbon steel pipe (killed carbon steel pipe) for high-temperature and high-pressure service. These A106 Seamless Pipes are available in three grades A, B, and C of varying strength. ASTM/ASME A-106/SA-106 grade seamless pipes is one of our most widely used grade of carbon steel and is readily available ex-stock for all standard thicknesses up to SCH160. NPS 1-1/2 and under may be either hot finished or cold drawn. NPS 2 and larger shall be hot finished unless otherwise specified. Surface finish standards are outlined in the specification. ASTM A106 Grades A and ASTM A106 B are obtainable in most sizes and schedule numbers, SA106 Grade B permits higher carbon and manganese contents than Grade A. The A106 Grade B Pipe supplied by ASTM Seamless Pipes has a maximum carbon content of 0.23%.

ASTM A53 is Standard Specification for Pipe, Steel, Black and Hot-Dipped, Zinc-Coated, Welded and Seamless.
ASTM A106 is Standard Specification for Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe for High-Temperature Service.

A53 Pipe vs A106 Pipe – (2) Applied Type of Pipe

A 53 can be welded seam or seamless depending on how it is specificed for purchase. It is a general steel pipe spec and covers galvanized pipe as well as black pipe.
A106 is a similar pipe in chemical composition but is intened for high temperature service (up to 750 Degs F). It is a seamless pipe.
At least in the US, there is usually A53 for welded pipe while A106 is seamless. If you ask for A53 in the US they will quote A106 as an alternate.

For example when we compare between A106-B and A53-B seamless from chemical composition point of view, we find that :
1. A106-B contains silicon, min. 0.10% where A53-B has zero%, and silicon is the important element for improving the heat resistance criteria.
2. A106-B contains manganese 0.29-1.06%, where A53-B 1.2%.
3. A106-B contains low sulfur and phosphorus, max. 0.035% where A53-B contains 0.05 and 0.045% respectively.

ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe Welding Procedure

Carbon steel is a large category of steel that encompasses many varying chemical compositions. Each type of carbon steel requires different considerations when welding. For example if you choose Low carbon steel to weld which is typically the most readily welded steel in a room temperature environment. These low carbon steel suitable for welding include C1008, C1018, A36, A1011 and A500. Medium carbon steel such as C1045 typically requires preheat and post-heat treatment to avoid weld cracking. High carbon steel is even more prone to weld cracking than the other two groups of carbon steel. Welding high carbon steel will most likely require very thorough preheating and post-heating processes to avoid this. It could also require special welding filler metals.

ASTM A106 Grade B Pipe welding is used extensively for pipe welding, aerospace, aviation, biomedical implants, fabrication of race cars, choppers, etc.

Difference Between Low-Alloy Steel & High-Alloy Steel

Alloy Steel is steel that is alloyed with a variety of elements in total amounts between 1.0% and 50% by weight to improve its mechanical properties. Alloy steels are broken down into two groups: low-alloy steels and high-alloy steels.

High-Alloy Steel

High-alloy steels are defined by a high percentage of alloying elements. Stainless steel is high-alloy steel which contains at least 12 percent chromium. Stainless steel is devided into three basic types: martensitic, ferritic, and austenitic. Martensitic steels contain the least amount of chromium, and known for high hardenability, and are mainly used for cutlery. Ferritic steels contains 12 to 27 percent nickel chromium alloy and are suitable to use in automobiles and industrial equipment. Austenitic steels contain high levels of nickel, carbon, manganese, or nitrogen and usually have the highest corrosion resistance. Austenitic steels are mainly used to store corrosive liquids and mining, chemical, or pharmacy equipment.

Low-Alloy Steel

Among alloy steels, when Ni, Cr, Mo, and other alloy elements content consist of less than 10.5% are known as low alloy steels. Low-alloy steels have a much lower percentage of alloying elements, usually 1 to 5 percent. These steels have very different strengths and uses depending on the chosen alloy. High-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, or microalloyed steels, are designed to provide better mechanical properties and/or greater resistance to atmospheric corrosion than conventional carbonsteels in the normal sense.

Alloy steel can further classify as

  • Low alloy steels: in which sum of total Alloying elements is < 5%
  • High alloy steels: in which sum of total Alloying elements is > 5%
